Five years ago, the Keystone Pipeline System began transporting crude oil from Canada to U.S. refineries. Earlier this week, we announced that Keystone has now safely delivered over one billion barrels of oil in that time.
The Keystone System offers the United States refineries a safe, stable supply of crude oil produced in North America. The pipeline system is one of the most modern and technologically advanced pipeline systems in the world. The more oil produced and refined in North America the more jobs and economic benefits remain in North America and the more energy secure we become.
Here are some other interesting facts about Keystone and the important role it plays in North America’s energy security
1. The Keystone System, at 2,639-miles (4,247-kilometres) is 0.1 per cent of the total amount of pipeline in the United States. The project crosses 11 states and provinces.
2. The project was granted a Presidential Permit on March 14, 2008, approximately two years after applications. For comparison Keystone XL has been waiting almost seven years for the same process.
The permit states, “Canada is the United States’ largest supplier of oil, natural gas, and electricity. The Department has determined that issuance of the permit to TransCanada Keystone Pipeline LP is in the national interest, in part, because it increases U.S. market access to crude oil supplies from a stable and reliable trading partner, Canada, that is in close proximity to the United States.”
3. The Keystone System is one of the safest and most technologically advanced pipeline systems in North America.

4. Keystone System has transported enough oil to fill up 1.2 billion tanks of gas, create 1.4 billion gallons of asphalt for roads and highways and 1.1 billion gallons of petrochemicals used to make everything from medical equipment to children’s toys.

5. The United States saved over $14.5 billion (USD) purchasing crude oil through the Keystone System versus sourcing it from Venezuela, Saudi Arabia or Iraq. Canadian crude trades at a considerable discount to Venezuelan crude despite being the same type of crude oil.
By building the infrastructure to connect Canadian oil fields with U.S. refineries not only does the U.S. benefit from the jobs, taxes and energy security, the U.S. also saves billions by accessing continental crude oil.
6. Over 863 kilometres or 530 miles of pipe was safely converted from gas to oil service on the Keystone System. This remarkable feat of “industrial recycling” saves companies hundreds of millions of dollars and reduces the amount of land impacted by new construction.
7. It would take approximately 1.7 million train cars or 3.3 million trucks (one way) to transport one billion barrels of crude oil.
8. Our aerial patrols once found discovered an elephant along the right-of-way.
9. The existing Keystone System has already employed well over 14,000 people directly and tens of thousands more indirectly.
10. Keystone has paid more than $200 million in property taxes to states and counties for schools, roads, hospitals.
